Writing a Love Letter to an Unlikely Friend: Close reading and descriptive writing activity

RSCH_Kahlo_Research_image-1

Your students will compare Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 130” with a rather unusual love letter written by Frida Kahlo to Diego Rivera. These two texts almost act as literary foils to each other, highlighting unique qualities in each—Kahlo’s absurd ways of describing the man she loves and Shakespeare’s ironic use of romantic clichés. Then your students will have the opportunity to write their own love letter to an oddity of their choice, pulling from the new methods of descriptive writing they just studied.
