Materials needed

Each group of four students will need the following materials, label all cups except water:

  • 1 plastic cup (with lid) filled halfway with baking soda
  • 1 plastic cup (with lid) filled halfway with salt
  • 1 plastic cup (with lid) filled halfway with flour
  • 1 plastic cup (with lid) filled halfway with cornstarch
  • 1 plastic cup (with lid) filled halfway with water
  • 4 small paper cups
  • 4 craft sticks
  • 5 spoons
  • Bag of dried beans
  • 2 cups water

Join curriculum specialist "High Decibel" Damon Smerchek as he shows students how to explore and collect evidence of multiple forces acting on a single object. They construct a device, the floating paperclip device, in which multiple forces act on a paper clip, causing the paperclip to float.

Materials needed

Per individual student or groups of 2–4 students

  • 1 large piece of cardboard (7’’x 3.5’’)
  • 1 small piece of cardboard (3.5’’ x 2’’)
  • 1 plastic cup (solo cup)
  • 1 piece of string (8” each)
  • 1 small paper clip
  • Scissors
  • 2 ring magnets

Materials needed

Teacher only materials

  • 3 bottles of food coloring (red, blue, yellow)
  • 1 small plastic cup
  • 2–3 toothpicks

Each group of four students will need the following materials (and you will need materials to conduct a class demonstration):

  • 2 large plastic cups
  • 2 strips of chromatography paper
  • 2 pencils
  • 2 small pieces of masking tape
  • 4 small pieces of clear tape
  • 1 pair of scissors

Join curriculum specialist Greg “Galaxy Greg” Trieste as he shows students how to begin engaging in the work of engineers as they build pinball machine box models. Students learn how engineers engage in certain practices as they design and change their models. 

Materials needed

One set for each group of students

  • Cardboard boxes small to medium sized (pizza boxes, shipping boxes, etc.)
  • 1 large rubber band
  • 1 piece of string about 12 inches
  • Table tennis ball or other small sized ball
  • Scissors to cut the cardboard (teachers may choose to do the cuts for the students)
