Natalie Wexler will discuss the latest research around reading, writing, and engagement in elementary school, along with the key findings of her book The Knowledge Gap: The Hidden Cause of America’s Broken Education System—and How to Fix it. 

Susan Lambert will share her research and knowledge related to the Science of Reading and its impact on literacy instruction. Before the event, tune into Science of Reading: The Podcast to hear Susan explore timely topics in early literacy instruction.

Meet our Speakers

Natalie Wexler Headshot

Natalie Wexler

Natalie Wexler is an education writer and the author of The Knowledge Gap: The Hidden Cause of America’s Broken Education System—and How to Fix It (2019). She is also the co-author, with Judith C. Hochman, of The Writing Revolution: A Guide to Advancing Thinking Through Writing in All Subjects and Grades (2017) and a senior contributor to Forbes. Her articles and essays have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and other publications. Before turning to education, Wexler worked as a freelance writer and essayist on a variety of topics, and as a lawyer and legal historian. She lives in Washington, D.C.

Susan Lambert

In addition to hosting the widely popular Science of Reading: The Podcast, Susan Lambert is also the chief academic officer for elementary humanities at Amplify. She joined Amplify in 2013 after over 15 years of experience working in K–12 education at school districts across the country. During this time, she served as a teacher and graduation standards coach at Rochester Community Schools (Rochester, MN) and curriculum coordinator at the Network of International Christian Schools (Southaven, MS). Susan also spent over eight years with the National Heritage Academies (Grand Rapids, MI) serving as principal, director of curriculum, senior director of curriculum and assessment, and senior director of specialized learning programs. Susan holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in elementary education from Winona State University, has completed advanced coursework in educational policy at Michigan State University, and is currently pursuing her doctoral degree at Mount St. Joseph University.
