Join us for the day to discuss science-based and equitable literacy instruction for your students.

Dr. Pam Kastner will explore the knowledge and instructional practices that form the building blocks of proficient reading—the foundational skills.

Nancy Hennessy will build connections to the skills and knowledge necessary for comprehending and constructing meaning as described in her book, The Reading Comprehension Blueprint: Helping Students Make Meaning from Text.

Meet our Featured Speakers

Pam Kastner, Ed.D.

Pam Kastner, Ed.D. is a lifelong educator and literacy advocate. As an educational consultant at the Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network (PaTTAN) Harrisburg, she serves as the State Lead for Literacy in Pennsylvania. Along with the PaTTAN literacy team, Dr. Kastner leads statewide literacy initiatives that include professional learning in the Science of Reading and structured literacy; onsite training, coaching, and consultation; a virtual literacy resource hub; and an international literacy conference. Dr. Kastner is also an adjunct professor at Mount Saint Joseph University in the Reading Science program where she teaches in the Masters’ and Doctoral Program. Additionally, she is President of The Reading League Pennsylvania and The Reading League Journal’s Practitioner Editorial Board, and a member of The Science of Reading: A Defining Movement coalition.

Nancy Hennessy, M.Ed.

Nancy Hennessy, M.Ed. is an experienced teacher, administrator, teacher trainer, and former International Dyslexia Association president. She currently works as a literacy consultant, designing and delivering virtual and live professional learning events to educators and administrators across the U.S. with focuses on dyslexia, Science of Reading, structured literacy—and most recently reading comprehension. Before consulting, Nancy worked in public schools leading innovative programming for general and special needs students and professional development for educators. She has authored The Reading Comprehension Blueprint: Helping Students Make Meaning of Text and “Working with Word Meaning: Vocabulary Instruction” in Multisensory Teaching of Basic Skills (fourth edition). In addition, while serving as a national trainer for LETRS, Nancy co-authored LETRS: Digging for Meaning: Teaching Text Comprehension (second edition).
