What are mental models and how do they drive comprehension? What does successful comprehension actually look like, and how can we measure it accurately? How can we move beyond treating comprehension as a single skill, to understanding it as a complex process with multiple components?

During our fall Comprehension Connections week, we introduced the basics of reading comprehension and the role it plays in literacy development. But there is so much left to explore! Join us for our Science of Comprehension Symposium to unpack what it means for students to truly comprehend what they’re reading, and how to get them there. This comprehensive six-hour symposium will transform how you understand and teach reading comprehension—moving beyond seeing it as a monolithic skill to embracing it as a detailed road map with multiple processes, products, and outcomes.

What you’ll discover:

  • The critical skills that influence reading comprehension, such as fluency, syntax, and background knowledge

  • Mental models and cognitive architecture: what they are, and how they drive comprehension

  • How to accurately measure comprehension as both process and outcome

  • Research-backed strategies and practical tools you can implement immediately

What you’ll receive:

  • 6+ hours of rigorous professional learning

  • Deep understanding of the science behind reading comprehension

  • Practical, classroom-ready strategies

  • A complete, well-rounded view of comprehension as process, product, and outcome
