Welcome back to hanger diagrams! As your students learn to think about equivalency and equations using hangers, consider inviting more of their early thinking by starting with a wrong answer first.
For instance, on this screen, consider asking students to tell you a number for the green square that will definitely make the scale not balance. Perhaps a number that’s too heavy. And then a number that’s too light.
Students may offer you “one million pounds” and “zero pounds” as possible answers. That’s a great place to start! You’ll help them understand at least two very important ideas: 1) how the hanger works and 2) that wrong answers are useful and welcome.
