Hi {{custom.firstName}},

Here at the end of the unit I hope you’ll find time for our lesson City Planning, which will offer an opportunity for you to invite different kinds of thinking and different kinds of students into your math class.

Start with their senses.

Some students may experience a ratio table as an invitation to express their creativity. Other students may have creative thoughts that don’t fit neatly into a ratio table. Those students may instead experience an invitation for their creativity when we ask them to “create a neighborhood that you think has a fair balance of housing.”

An image of market rate and affordable housing.

Later, we’ll ask students to create specific housing ratios. But here, I hope you’ll seize the moment to start with student senses, specifically their sense of what’s fair and unfair.

Students will likely appreciate the opportunity to express their senses and, in return, will likely offer you ideas you can help them develop later.
