{{custom.firstName}}, I'm so happy we're partnered up for this unit. When we help students describe the world in data, it's very easy for students to lose the world for the data. I'm sure you've seen students become so wrapped up in operations and numbers that they report a fractional answer to a question that probably shouldn't have a fractional answer—like 2.25 as the answer to "How many bus drivers?".
Over and over again in this unit, we'll use the power of digital technology to help your students start with their senses of the world and connect that sense tightly to mathematics.
Whenever you sense students losing the connection between data and the world, consider asking them, "What does each data point represent?"
In this and future lessons, our goal will be to use descriptions of data to serve people instead of the other way around.
