Hi {{custom.firstName}},

Here’s a great question: Who would like to share their thinking with the class? What’s not as great is the silence that often follows when it is asked. So how can we surface the entire class’s thinking? By showing them one another’s  responses.

We do just that on this screen in the upcoming lesson.

Once students press “Share With Class,” they see their classmates’ responses on their number line. We don’t limit the responses to correct answers only. Students see every response, and they are invited to discuss whether any answers are incorrect and how they know they are incorrect. Students lead the conversation while the technology takes a back seat.

This screen gives you a great opportunity to have a conversation about why our ideas are brilliant and helpful, whether they are right or wrong. Consider asking students to reflect on what they learned from seeing one another’s thinking, or what holds them back from sharing their thinking more often.

Convincing reluctant students to share their thinking is a marathon task to accomplish, not a sprint. In order to let students lead, we have to grow their self-confidence so they see themselves as capable doers and thinkers of math. We hope every invitation to share their thinking reminds them that their ideas are brilliant.
