Dear {{custom.firstName}}

Something I observed when I was a teacher was that many students have the idea that in math class, it isn’t enough to be correct. They felt they had to be correct in the right way, thinking about math in one particular way, even when lots of ways were effective and correct.

That’s one reason I’m excited about this screen in Pen Pals.

A picture of this screen. Ayaan lives 900 meters from his school. Eva lives 2000 feet. Who lives closer?

We have chosen numbers here to help students see that there are lots of ways to think about math, that we should learn from each other's ways of thinking, that all of us are smarter than one of us.

Some students will convert Ayaan’s distance to feet and compare. Others will convert Eva’s distance to meters and compare.

I encourage you to find an example of both kinds of student and go wild with enthusiasm for each way of thinking, helping students understand that the path to mathematical understanding is a wide one with plenty of room for everyone.
