Examining the importance of dual language assessment in early literacy

To help illustrate the long-standing inequities Spanish-speaking students have faced in the classroom, we’ve developed an infographic that highlights the challenges these students encounter when assessed only in English and not their home language as well. Did you know Amplify recently developed a K–6 Spanish assessment called mCLASS® Lectura that works to address these issues?

Explore the mCLASS Lectura universal screener.

Jenna Cook

Jenna Cook

Mooresville Graded School District, NC

“Jenna is one of the most amazing and knowledgeable IC's there are! As a second-year teacher, I have been blessed to have Jenna by my side since day one, and she has made a huge impact on myself and my classroom. No matter the question, no matter the level of difficulty or ease, no matter how silly or serious, she has an answer and will lead me in the right way. If she doesn't know, she will find out ASAP. From data digs, to implementing new ways, to just plain resources and what-do-I-do questions, Jenna helps with a smile on her face no matter what. She does this for everyone in my building. She has no limit to her help and does so for anyone who asks and makes you feel like you are the only person in the world who matters to her. Her curriculum, data, and resource knowledge make her my one-stop go-to for all my issues. She is absolutely amazing!”

Advice and answers

The Importance of Dual Language Assessment and How to Deliver It in Your Classroom

Assessing Spanish-speaking students in their native language is central to leveling the playing field and empowering them on their literacy journey. Replay this webinar with biliteracy expert Dr. Lillian Durán, who discussed how dual language assessment—in both English and Spanish—enables teachers to pinpoint where their dual language learners really are in their skill development and what instruction to prioritize.

Teacher tips: The Instruction tab

Chrystal Wise, an Amplify Ambassador, is an instructional facilitator and dyslexia coordinator in Arkansas. She shared the following tip: “The Instruction tab has been a lifesaver for my teachers. It will group like students’ needs based on their DIBELS® scores. They have used the scripted lessons to print for their instructional aides to use during RTI time. This has saved them so much time in creating lesson plans for their aides.”
