Tell me about a different world.

 

Here’s a confession. I often find it hard to know what to do with wrong answers to multiple choice questions. Unlike free response questions where you can find value in wrong answers, a wrong answer to a multiple choice question just sits here . . . wrong . . . without any hint of the interesting thinking behind it.

Five statements about the race.

For example, on this screen from The Tortoise and the Hare, the toughest item for students was “At 9 minutes the fox is traveling the fastest.” It’s true, but 25% of students said it was false.

 

In these situations, you can explain the reasoning behind the right answer. You can also help students see the value in wrong answers and their connection to the right answers by saying, “Tell me about a different world, one where the fox isn’t traveling the fastest at 9 minutes. What would that look like?”

 

The realization that speed and position are different features here can help students develop their understanding of mathematics. This teaching move may also help them understand their value as thinkers and the value of their thoughts, even the ones that are still developing.
