We love hypothetical questions because they lead to really interesting conversations. Just take a look at this screen from Under the Sea.
This screen invites students to consider: What happens when our mathematical models are less predictable? What could happen in the real world? Lean in to those stories your students create.
When most of your students finish their story, turn your class into story time! Tell your students to read their story to a partner without revealing which graph they chose. See if your students can match the graph with their partner’s story. Highlight some student voices as they share their stories with the whole class.
By inviting students to bring their identity into math class, we learn more about them as mathematicians and, more importantly, as people. We’re excited to see what could happen in your math class when you lean in.
