Welcome to Unit 6! Before we get started, please let us know how Unit 5 went for you.
I’d love to think more with you about teacher moves that invite student thinking, moves that put students at ease and encourage them to bring their early knowledge and offer it for the class’s benefit.
I’m trying to imagine learning about plots from a student’s point of view. Just when they get their heads around dot plots, we ask them to learn about scatter plots.
I think we’d love for students to learn that mathematicians invented scatter plots not just to amuse themselves but to make patterns in life more apparent and comprehensible.
As you reach the synthesis of this lesson and students think about both representations. I hope you’ll take a second to highlight the advantages of both, helping them understand that math is power, not punishment!

Set a timer for the data collection. It went smoothly in all of my classes by keeping it time-limited and focused.

If possible, create a measurement station in the classroom for students to cycle through to get more consistent results. I made a height and wingspan station using masking tape pinned to the wall. I chose a student to help other students get their wingspan while I quickly measured height. I had students completing the practice for 8.6.1 while groups came back to get measured. Each student was given a small piece of scrap paper to write their measurements down. When all measurements were taken, I assigned the lesson and restricted pacing to slide 1 until all the data was entered.

Think of multiple reasons (advantages or uses) for each display. Try to come up with alternative questions that could and could not be answered by the data displays. Students had a hard time coming up with questions on their own and I had to improvise responses and questions. In the lesson plan, you get one example response but MORE is beneficial.
