Hi {{custom.firstName}},

The upcoming lesson, Finding Desmo, is an introduction to standard deviation. Do you think this screen is at the beginning, middle, or end of the lesson?

A screen from Finding Desmo that shows students an explanation of standard deviation.

You might be surprised that we do not start with the definition of standard deviation. Why? Because students are brilliant.

This lesson introduces students to standard deviation for the first time. Students deeply explore a context, make noticings, then author what they think standard deviation means.

Let students lead and build your explanation from their thinking. Snapshot a few student responses that have pieces of the definition, and be curious about what they wrote. “Which tank helped you most when crafting your definition? Why?” “Does this definition work for the different fish tanks?”

The more students realize that they have the intuition to attach their own words to a formal, mathematical idea, the more they begin to see themselves as brilliant mathematicians and leaders in their classroom.
