Can I share with you a screen I love from your upcoming lesson, Bicycle Goals?
In a problem-based curriculum like ours, it’s often hard to know the best moment to share some of your own knowledge. Too soon and students won’t benefit from developing some of their own ideas. Too late and they might get frustrated.
One helpful moment for sharing is when you see several different strategies start to emerge. And some helpful knowledge you might share is the connections you see between those strategies.
On this screen, we offer two strategies in advance. After students have discussed which strategy matches theirs, consider using your knowledge to help students connect them. "Where is the times five from the table hiding in the tape diagram? Where are all the numbers from the double number line hiding in the table?"
In choosing a careful moment for your explanation, you have the opportunity to help students learn the math. By using your knowledge to help students connect different strategies, you can also help students learn that there are lots of ways to be smart in mathematics, and that all of us are smarter than any one of us.
